After a week of heavy rain, the warm and sunny conditions were a blessing for Kings Hill's match against Royal Blackheath, however it became quickly apparent that should you go offline, the ever growing rough would bring severe punishment.
Out first we had the pair who won their opening match comfortably against Hever Castle, Rowley Draper and Richard Moxham. In the back match we had Steve Mallard, and our captain for the day, Danny Jones. Who had, the day before, been knocked out of the Kent Amateur Championship at the quarter final stage and was keen to get back to winning ways.
After losing the opening hole, the first pair managed to settle down and win holes 2, 5, 7 and 8. This match was comfortable. The pair behind were also able to storm into a quick lead, being 4UP thru 8 holes, featuring an astonishing iron shot from the right rough on the 5th from Danny to just a couple of inches, moments after I had declared it "impossible to hit it close to that pin". Both groups lost the 9th meaning we had leads of 2up and 3up at the turn.
The back nine saw two very different matches unfold. Despite winning the 10th, Danny and Steve were up against it for long periods, although thinking about making double bogey on 14 and still managing a half, suggests that no matter what errors they made, it wouldn't have been too costly over all. With a slender 1UP lead on 17, Steve was able to hit an excellent shot to 6 feet. This and a win on 18 saw that match finish 3UP.
In the front pair however, Rowley and Richard showed their more ruthless side, winning 10, 11 and 12 to storm in a 5UP lead; including an excellently mapped out birdie on the final par 5. Despite halving 13, the guys showed their solidarity and won every remaining hole on the back 9, against a pair who had clearly run out of steam down the stretch. A staggering win of 10UP.
Blackheath sent far from their best team but you can only play what's in-front of you, and our boys did that in emphatic fashion.
Result: Kings Hill win 13UP
The next round will be a tough away game at Rochester and Cobham which will be arranged in due course.
Well done all!
